The Spoleto Writers' Workshop

19 July - 03 August 2005

What makes this workshop different and so useful and memorable? The faculty directs the participants through a series of writing exercises that reveal each writer's strengths and suggest new possibilities for future writing. Beyond this kind of work, which is both emotional and technical, the focus is on freeing the imagination for revision. The emphasis of the Spoleto Writers' Workshop therefore is NOT on work that the participants bring with them for group discussion, but on new practices, methods, and strategies that are explored during our stay in Italy. The atmosphere of the program is also greatly enhanced by the spectacular setting in Umbria, and by mixed activities with members of our other workshops.
Objective: To advance the mastery of writing in one's chosen genre, in a small, select group. Participants will be serious writers, interested in advancing their craft and deepening their sense of the writer's art.
Description: Participants will write new work based on specific writing assignments or exercises and then will discuss the results and the implications of the exercises for their own work. Each participant will also have one private consultation with one of the three instructors. The writers will be divided into groups that change as the workshop proceeds, so that writers will work with all instructors, and all will produce new work in different genres. In addition to free writing time, there will be evening sessions of readings and discussions of relevant topics such as publications, manuscript preparation, etc. Much emphasis will be placed on each writer's engagement and improvement in his/her craft, on further writing and reading, and on a sense of the writer's vocation.
The Program Also Includes:
  • Optional Italian language classes, with concentration on conversation, held on working days
  • Lodging in a 16th-century Convent, a hotel, or an apartment - pre-arrangement with SAS
  • Attendance at a Master Class in singing and a concert by vocal program participants
  • Daily continental breakfast
  • Lunch on working days, plus some wonderful parties
